Framelight Adapting Chi-Chian

The Hollywood Reporter says that production company Framelight has optioned rights to the cult comic "Chi-Chian" and will develop it as a feature film.

The fairy tale-tinged "Chi-Chian" is set in a dystopian New York -- the city has lost its independence and become a prefecture of Japan -- and centers on a seemingly ordinary young woman who has been tapped as a heroine and must fight samurais, robots and zombies to protect her loved ones.

The property, which began life as a six-part comic book from the Cuban-American musician Voltaire, spawned a set of digital episodes for Syfy as well as a role-playing game.

Jeffrey Erb and Robert Robinson Jr. will produce.

So New York becomes independent from the U.S., only to be come a colony to Japan? That's kind of an interesting premise. And Voltaire made it? Hopefully e can perform in the film as well because I loved his work on Billy and Mandy.

@James:

Yeah, because pre-Blade, every movie was made from an original script right?

Hollywood has always made movies based on other media, primarily, but not exclusively, prose novels and short stories. Script writers still have to take the time (and money) to turn them into movie scripts though - and the same goes for comic book properties.

Nothing has changed from Hollywood's perspective. The only difference is that the material they are adapting is now taking inspiration from the things we love...

Pray tell, how is this a bad thing? You would rather they film stuff you aren't interested in?

Has complaining - about absolutely anything at all - become so endemic that no longer is any thought put into exactly what is being complained about?

Moral: Hollywood going comic-book crazy is A Good Thing. For us. Yes some crap will be turned out, some properties will be poorly represented, but in case it hasn't dawned on you people yet; this is the Golden Age of comic book movies. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Voltaire? Really? His song the Vampire Club is hilarious! This might be pretty good. Can't wait to see how this turns out!

I hate this comic. It's terrible, but perhaps I'll enjoy it better as a film.
