Update: Orci & Kurtzman Producing Doc Savage
Source:Ain't It Cool News
October 26, 2009

UPDATE: Collider reports that Orci and Kurtzman are, in fact, not producing this film. Instead, Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur are producing the project.

Ain't It Cool News has learned that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek) are producing the adaptation of the Doc Savage comics. Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon) is set to write the script. The site asked Black about the project:

I asked this with dread in my belly, and Shane passed the test by saying the character can not be separated from the 30s. This is correct. Right now, he is preparing to write the script. He has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. It will be an original DOC SAVAGE story that attempts to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of Lester Dent's work.

"Doc Savage" was originally published in American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s. He was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic at Street and Smith Publications, with additional material contributed by the series' main writer, Lester Dent.

Looking forward to a new take on Doc Savage. I remember how dull the Ron Ely version was. Bare in mind it was not Ron Ely fault.

And Doc Savage is who? Just like Jonah Hex, Ghost in a Shell, Captain America, lobo and Lucky Luke. Nobody cares about another lame movie that nobody will watch.

I wonder how many gratuitous humping scenes they will feel it is necessary to put in this movie.

Doc Savage is one of the original pulp action heroes. You people are ignorant and disrespectful. You might as well be dissing Buck Rogers, Solomon Kane and The Phantom.

Orci and Kurtzman producing? Well, just as long as they aren't writing. Because the "Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen" script should have never made it past the toilet paper dispenser in Paramount's bathroom.

@ questforfire777atyahoo

I like pulp heroes as well. But let's be honest for a moment. The fan base is not there anymore for these heroes and they have withered away into antiquity. These heroes don't translate well to film and the original, hardcore fan base is either dead, or living in a retirement home.

@ kevlopez

I agree with your sentiment on Doc Savage and Lucky Luke as no one other than us comic book folks know about him. But the same can't be said of Jonah Hex, Lobo, Ghost In The Shell, and Captain America. They are moderately to well known characters.

Now, don't come after me saying that Jonah Hex and Lobo are not that well known outside of comic book fans. They are if anyone has seen Batman The Animated Series and Superman The Animated Series or the Justice League cartoons.

Captain America, well, he's an icon and we all know him.

And Ghost In The Shell is arguably the greatest anime ever, or the second greatest anime ever next to Akira.

Doc Savage and The Shadow are enjoying a nice return with their books now being re-published. You guys need to put down the Wolverine & Spawn comics and try something new.

Without Doc Savage, Superman would not be around. And Bob Kane plagiarized The Shadow for Batman. Just glad they are keeping him in the 30's.

But Orci and Kurtzman? Why do these ass-hats get all the good stuff to ruin? And from the writer of "The Last Action Hero" too...

@ Wyngarde

Agreed with the Doc Savage and The Shadow sentiment. Even though these are not comics, they make for enjoying short novellas.

And it's pretty much an accepted fact that Bob Kane did not plagiarize The Shadow, but rather took credit for what was Bill Finger's creation of Batman.

There's a place for noirish films in this day and age, films that had an innocence we no longer can lay claim to. Setting Doc in it's original time period will engage original fans and hopefully introduce new ones to a world and time that though gone, should not be forgotten. All of the heroes, and their tech, that we enjoy today had their roots in the pulps of the thirties and forties and true comic/superhero fans should be able to appreciate this.

I'd like to see how they pull that off. He's Doc Savage, the Renaissance Man, the Man of Bronze, the Man of Tomorrow. Decades later and he's still the kind of man we try to become.

Movie making is a business. The majority of the films that get made have never even been heard of by the general public, so what's the point?

I never heard of Harry Potter until the film came out. Men In Black? Blade? Based on comics which the majority of the people never heard of. Heck, Iron-Man was considered a B-list character by Hollywood standards.

Anyway, a Doc Savage film would be great since he's been out of the public eye for so long.

Who is Doc Savage you ask? He's the Dos Equis guy. But from the 30s.

Posted by: thedoctorrr on October 26, 2009 at 06:21:22

At damned last! He's the first Action hero and his influences can be seen in stuff from Indy to Bond.
It needs to be set in the 30s and move at a rapid pace just like the books. I'm definitely looking forward to this being a Doc fan.
And man, would I like to see a film of The Spider, a pulp whose body count remains unchallenged.

I am looking forward to a new Doc Savage movie.

Dwayne Johnson should play Doc Savage....

By making movies about characters before comics had really gotten off, they're broadening the horizon of the much younger generation. Of course the close-minded will generally knock it down because they can't comprehend beyond what they already know or think they know. Either the movie will happen or it will not. Plenty of movies were in the planning stages and were then shelved for reasons unknown. The Watchmen movie was mistaken for a super hero movie because people just saw costumed people and then didn't like it because they didn't understand what it was all about in the first place. If a movie is done right, then maybe people will "get it" and appreciate it for what it is.

Posted by: DCas on October 26, 2009 at 09:49:37

@kevlopez Wow, because you haven't heard of him they shouldn't make the movie? Never mind you lose all credibity by not knowing WHO CAPTAIN AMERICA is, you just sound stupid.

If done right, this would be very cool indeed. I agree there are not a lot of younger fans of Doc Savage but there are a lot of older fans. I'd go see this before most other movies.

Posted by: comic fan on October 26, 2009 at 10:12:17

Hopefully it won't be the camp version they did with Ron Ely in 1975. Credit to Ely who bulked up incredibly for the movie though. Also the "unheard of Captain America" is my most anticipated movie, as I am sure it will be a lot of other fans.

Is there a moderator out there? Maybe the post and comments are too new, but perhaps the moderator could scrub Mr. Jackoff's remarks as they aren't fit for ANYone's eyes to read, especially the younger participants. At least in this thread, on this site.

(Laughing). Absolutely!! Well put.
This has potential to a great series of movies, if done right. Much like the 'Indiana Jones' movies introduced a new generation to the pulp serial stories, I think Doc Savage can do the same.
I don't know how people out there have seen the 'Solomon Kane' trailer, but it looks great.
I'm stoked about this resurgance of classic characters

Posted by: Mojo on October 26, 2009 at 10:55:25

Quagmire, I love your Dos Equis comparison. That is Doc -- sans the moustache. Doc is part Indiana Jones and part MacGyver. BTW -- the best introduction to Doc Savage isn't the novels in my opinion. That comes later. Its the B & W magazine of the 70's. I think Marvel published it. The artwork was perfect. I think it was done by Steranko. Guaranteed to make you love the character. If they base the movie off those magazines, it will be a hit!
