Mastodon Talks Jonah Hex Score
October 24, 2009
Atlanta metal band Mastodon talked to Paste magazine about writing the score for the comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, opening in theaters on June 18, 2010. Here's a clip:
Historically, Mastodon’s been classified mostly within the metal and prog spectrusm, but Crack the Skye saw the band stretch out its sound. The Jonah Hex score, however, could contain the most expansive Mastodon material to date. “Some of it was heavy, some of it was very moody,” Sanders said. “A lot of it was spacey, Melvins B-sides, Pink Floyd-like, surreal outer space, like Neil Young’s Dead Man. Swirling, nausea music.”
You can read more on how they were approached and how they collaborated with director Jimmy Hayward here. The movie stars Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon.

Mastodon are incredible, and so was Neil Young's Dead Man, so if they are going for that feel, then this could be a winner!

why can't dc/warner brothers get their act together and make a movie about a character we want to see? i know green lantern is on the way, but seriously, the time and money they spent on this could have gone towards flash, wonder woman, green arrow, or a bunch of other characters more deserving of a film.

i may end up eating my words, but i predict this movie will do the same as watchmen. it wont even make its budget. why? BECAUSE THE GENERAL PUBLIC HAS NO IDEA WHO JONAH HEX IS!!!

@ MAD
do you work for WB accounts dont worry about budget worry if the film is good CBale in americanpsycho was ridiculed when it first came out and now its a cult classic and watchmen made over 40 million profit with dvd sales not bad for an unkown title to the masses and i rate watchmen second to BB & TDK so for me WB is doing eveything right...id rather see DEADMAN LOBO JONAH HEX LOSRES then wonderwomen or flash or green arrow..i cant wait for GREENLANTERN though i love the edgy films

Hey ya'll. Yo I know this thing is talking about Jonah Hex, and I'm going to let ya'll guys finish your comments, but I just want to say that Batman and Robin is the best comic book movie ever! Oh and Beyonce should play Wonder Woman!

I agree... this movie will NOT break no box office cuz unless your into comics. No one knows who Jonah Hex is... it will be OK. but that`s all.. and DC/TW should focus on bringing. GREEN ARROW, FLASH, WONDER WOMAN, SUPERMAN MAS OF STEEL, JUSTICE LEAGUE, TITANS and so many marketble franchises DC has.....

For DC, I'd like to see Teen Titans, Aqua Man, Super Max: Green Arrow (Green Arrow in Prison script), The Legion of Super Heroes, a new Superman reboot flick, & The Justice League made into movies. I am excited for Green Lantern & Jonah Hex. I am most waiting for The Dark Knight sequel though.

@ Mario A. Kusakabe JR
Blade was an unknown character yet the movie was a box office success. The same can happen to Jonah Hex!

sounds very interesting...dead man was a great score ( and great underated movie) and for something like jonah hex there should be a surreal soundtrack

WB treats their comic book properties like literary book adaptations. General audiences DO show up to se genre films as they did before the comic book craze. People who like stylized action don't care if it came from a original idea, a book or comic book, they want to be entertained without having to do homework (reading issues number ... etc). Not everyone wants to see 'Men in Tights' all the time. When they do make movie with well known comic book characters fanboys complain about those who didn't invest hours into the comic series.

They should use a good country band or country singer. This is a Western someone with a Cash feel maybe.

The only thing going against this movie so far is Megan Skank City Fox, otherwise I'm excited to see a DC underdog get a movie. Liked Hex since I first saw him in the old Batman cartoon, so I say bring him on, there's far too few DC characters with movies compared to the army of Marvel.

Mastodon in Jonah Hex and Anvil in Green Hornet. I knew metal went with comics.

Movies don't fail because audiences aren't already exceptionally familiar with the characters. Until Superheroes started a trend of existing properties being exploited as movies, subject matter seemed to find an audience if it was good enough for a long, long time.
(Just pointing it out because there always seem to be those that moan a bit when their favourite character isn't the one being devoted a film.)
The way to advertise Jonah Hex (or any comic book property) should simply be: 'yes, the character exists in a comic, but this is a great film' end of story.

The description of Mastodon doesn't sound like nausea music at all. Taylor Swift, Akon, Nsync, that's nausea music.

I'm sorry Jonah Hex. I know when I did Austin Powers Goldmember it was a very special time, so come on up Jonah and have your moment.
Posted by: Fernando81 on October 24, 2009 at 19:49:36
I suppose they are betting for guys will go to see Megan Fox as a western fox if they don't know who Jonah Hex is, hell... even I don't care much about this movie
Posted by: Josh Brolin on October 24, 2009 at 20:10:47
Thanks Beyonce, this movie is guaranteed to be a hit. Just as long as Megan Fox don't run her mouth about the director like she did this summer with Michael Bay while promoting her Transformers movie.
