Akiva Goldsman Talks Lobo
October 20, 2009
The Los Angeles Times talked to Akiva Goldsman about the upcoming Guy Ritchie-directed Lobo adaptation. Here's an excerpt:
There's something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply stylized yet they are all grounded; there's a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but it makes perfect sense when you've seen his films."
Goldsman added: "We've never seen Guy's sensibility married to a project with such a large special effects budget. "
Goldsman said Ritchie will shoot a test scene in November -- "We've got the character design pretty much done," Goldsman said, "and the test will get us moving forward to the next step" -- and casting will be decided after that.
In the interview, Goldsman also addresses the Batman & Robin failure and projects in the works like Jonah Hex and Swamp Thing. You can read it in full here.

I'm just hoping they change the idea of making it PG-13. Not that I'm the first to express such sentiment.

DAMN!! I hate firsters, but this reference was the only way I'd ever do it. And I missed it. God, I've entered a whole new realm of loserdom.
All respect to Honest Fan.

He still doesn't get it. He should just stay away from Superhero movies. Hancock was pretty terrible and Batman and Robin was a cinematic abortion.

LOBO as PG13 doesn't really bother me because Lobo was always over-the-top cartoon violence and I think (depending on how they tell the story) they could pull it off as long as it is highly stylized. Ritchie can do that.
They should really go for the mid-90s Lobo which was basically a parody of 90s comics. Which is well deserved, as anyone who read DC and Marvel during the 90s would agree. Their **** was weak and Lobo was a total rip on all that.
So was EVIL ERNIE. Boo yah,

Akiva Goldsman was the writer of Batman & Robin, so you know what to expect of Lobo (as I understand, most people hated and still hate Batmen & Robin).

I really hope this is a good movie Lobo is cool and crazy as all getout. He killed his entire race for his school science fair. And i like most people did not like Batman and Robin. So why would they have Akiva Goldsman who wrote that crapfest do another superhero movie. I hope he has learned from his mistakes and does not repeat them. And what movies has Guy Ritchie directed.

Batman and Robin was terrible but Akiva Goldsman has written other movies that weren't that bad. and also the super hero movie bar has been raised since the days of batman and robin. As a writer he'll have to notice why the good comic based movies were good and why the bad ones sucked I don't think we have to worry about any more Geoge Clooney Batmans fighting the Governator as Mr. Freeze haha...So I think this movie has potential to be good.

(sniff) (sniff) Batman and Robin was a good movie, and if they ask me to play Lobo, I'll give it the same mediocore performances like Batman.

just like a Ghost Rider movie, Lobo needs to be freaking R rated! None of that PG-13 crap.

hey how about if i direct lobo. let me make it cartoonish like my two batman movies, put nipples on lobo costume, and make it just as bad as Batman and Robin. George Clooney will play Lobo
Posted by: dc zombie on October 20, 2009 at 08:37:53
no lobo please. make a flash, wonder woman, green arrow instead but no freaking lobo.

I hope warner bros let me play Lobo. I have not done a action movie in a while and i want to get away from disney and hannah montana. plus i need to prove that I am MUCH better than John Cena in the wrestling ring

too bad del Toro isn't doing this one. I would like to see it done in the style of the first Hellboy (NOT the weak sequel). I'll see it anyway just because 'the Main Man' is...well...the MAN.
Posted by: The Dang Man on October 20, 2009 at 10:18:18
I repeat, just like Ghost Rider I want Lobo to be rated R. Make it violent like Rambo

i say take some meathead wrestler from brooklyn give him 6 months intensive acting classes and a stack of old school lobo comics and let him loose on the role. good idea of not its a recipe for hilarity

I liked all those muppet directed batman films. i was also like ten when they cam out. Lobo is beyond me, but Jonah Hex...now that has potential to be one of the best films of the year.

As with anything I watch, I take it with a grain of salt, that's why I didn't mind B&R. I just hated the way they did Bane. Completely mindless "BOMB... BOMB" A shame what happened to the actor.
I'm not too familiar with Lobo, Jonah Hex or the Losers, so I'll sit back and enjoy the ride, for what it's worth.
Going into movies without preconseved notions of what to expect is a good thing and allows me to enjoy this entertainment a lot more than most people.
I'm a big DBZ fan and I didn't mind DB:E, I was entertained and that's all I could ask for. Eventhough, it followed pretty much none of the canon that we know and love.

Lobo could work if they really play up the comedy and parody of the violent comics of the 90's, but i would expect it to be R rated...
Posted by: fettastic on October 20, 2009 at 11:52:20
He's never going to get out from under Batman & Robin. That movie was a calamity of horrors. I don't know how much of it was his fault, but he and Schumacker will forever be tied to that crapfest.

Funny not, George Clooney has said he killed the Batman Franchise it was his fault for years.
Lobo is teaming with a little girl... COME ON! How is that Lobo?
Posted by: Lobo on October 20, 2009 at 12:07:15
Lobo wants r rated movie! Lobo wants extreme violence and comedy! none of that PG-13 crap!
Posted by: Tobey Maguire on October 20, 2009 at 12:15:34
Let me play Lobo! I can portray him as a weak, whiny, dancing emo hero just I did with spiderman!

Screw you Spidey, I can play Lobo
