Legendary Pictures Adapting Gravel
October 8, 2009
Legendary Pictures is picking up the film rights to "Gravel," the comic book series created by Warren Ellis and published by Avatar Press, reports Variety.
The project revolves around the character William Gravel, a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make some extra cash.
Ellis introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels published under the title "Strange Kiss."
He will write the initial draft of the screenplay for the film and serve as executive producer on the project.

Enough with the obscure comic book properties that no one has even heard of! DC, I'm talking to you!

Since they're turning their heads to less known comic books it's about time they do a Blacksad film as well.

I hope it's good.

Who doesn't know Warren Ellis? He's the British write who wrote that G.I. Joe: Resolute. You know, the one fans were licking their balls over.

Never heard of it. Hope it's good.

Dresden is better. It is a Strange Kiss/Gravel is a ok story.

Great news. Probably one of Ellis' more approachable (and adaptable) properties. Perfect fit for a big-budget high octane supernatural action flick.

So pretty much Constantine.

This is great news! This is one of Ellis's best characters. He is a Combat Magician. In the Strange Kiss storyline he was not really explored very well. But the following series of stories have created a rich tapestry to build a film off of.
For those who don't know Ellis, he created the AUTHORITY. He writes Astonishing X-MEN, Transmetropolitan, No Hero, RED(Currently in Production), Global frequency, Orbiter(optioned)and so many other ass kicking titles than you can shake a stick at. He also wrote GI JOE: Resolute which did more for GI JOE than the movie.
This character is in no way like Constantine.
Sure he does magic, but he could kick Constantine's ass

He looks and dresses exactly like Constantine and his schtick is fighting supernatural beings with magic for clients like Constantine. I'm not really seeing the differenciation here. But that's fine because Constantine is a pretty cool character.
Posted by: BIGW1966 on October 9, 2009 at 12:42:42
The differances?
Well he is a trained S.A.S operative.
When we first meethim he is a member of a group called the minor seven. This group is the seven most powerful lower level Magicians.
The major seven are the very powerful ones who not only secretly rule England, but also are as much a part of the country as the land itself.
Gravel has come into possession of the Siggsand script. It is a tome of magic so powerful that whoever possesses it will become all powerful. Someone is killing the minor seven and when they go after Gravel they get more than they bargained for. (he is the ONLY magician who is a trained Soldier)
Gravel ends up as the only one standing in the minor seven and is therefore invited to join the Major Seven. Who are also being Murdered.
Constantine is a bastard who got kicked out of hell and does his whole schtik.
He is nothing like Gravel except for two things.
They both do magic.
They are both from England.

Whatever... I think that now they want to adapt all the comic books. I don't think that these titles get much success. Stick to the main famous comic characters.

Constantine is a much better title than this and more known. Still it didn't get far.

That's cool. Now, if Legendary Pictures can secure those 'Godzilla' rights, I'll be quite happy, indeed.

Another ywanfest obscure title that will never sell to the masses. ZZZZZZZZZZ!
Posted by: BIGW1966 on October 10, 2009 at 09:56:06
@Macap; I wouldn't call this an obscure yawnfest.
Just because it may not be your cup of tea doesn't make it a yawnfest. This guy fights Zombies, Soldiers, Weird lizard people and evil magicians.
Additionally, a book like this one has a much better chance of being "Accepted by the masses" who would see it in the theater.
Not everyone wants to see Superheroes on screen.

personally, lengandary pictures is a great company.BATMAN BEGINS ,THE DARK KNIGHT,WATCHMEN,ECT are some of their good movies.they produce good stuff so im not worried about them messing up this.looks great though, impressive constatine comparisons but who cares.he sounds cooler than constatine though.
the same comparisons could be made to BATMAN and NITE OWL but who cares.so alike onthe outside but so different on the inside.same case with these 2.anyway,zombies, soilders, lizard people and evil magicians;impressive roster of enimies.
