UPDATE: Roven on What Happened to The Flash
Source:IGN
October 7, 2009

With the recent announcement that Warner Bros. had created DC Entertainment, the company was said to be taking back some of long-gestating projects back from producers to star anew. IGN talked to The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven, who says The Flash is one of those films:

"I was involved at one point with The Flash," said Roven. "And Warner Bros. came to me and said, 'The work that you've been doing hasn't yet resulted in something that any of us, including the filmmaking team, feel could be greenlit as a movie. We're trying to accomplish something that takes into account the entire, rich DC character world, and we'd like to pull it back. That doesn't mean that you aren't going to be a part of it. We just want to take a different kind of approach. Do you mind if we try that?' If we had something that was really working..."

You can read more on this here.

UPDATE: In a new article, the film's current screenwriter, Dan Mazeau, told IGN that "The Flash has not been hobbled. Everything is moving forward as planned... I'm still writing the script. Geoff Johns is still consulting. Flash fans have no cause for concern, and -- IMO -- lots to be excited about."

I'm tired of all the comic book movies that aren't acurate! Stay true to the comics and the character and their origin! Seems to me that by doing that you should have a pretty good movie!

Is this the comment-board sponsored by Sesame Street?

Anyway, with The Green Lantern movie on its way, I'm glad that DCE is opting for The Flash. It should, however, take a completely different turn from the MARVEL approach (also known as the Rabbit/Milking approach owing to their multiple films in multiple years around multiple studios with Mickey Mouse spearheading it all... wait, we should call it the Mouse/Milk approach since mice do multiply a lot...). By different, I mean NOLAN-esque. Yes, a Bat-fan and a douche all the way, but seriously, statistics betrayed Superman Returns and any good moviegoer would rather see a standalone film on par with The Dark Knight (with its maturity and all) rather than another CGI/Action-based movie like The Incredible Hulk or the Spiderman series (besides, MARVEL always aims mostly toward 13-year-olds. Just look at their characters. Minus the FF, that's unfortunately for 4th graders). More maturity? As for Flash? well, that's one character where you CAN go the extra mile (no pun intended... honest) and turn into the DC's equivalent to Deadpool (hint: Ryan Reynolds should've been THE FLASH instead of HAL JORDAN) OR... you could make this a true sci-fi film like Minority Report. Your call DC.

I don't care which goofball-a$$ed cartoon character makes my Superflicks ... Mickey Mouse .... Bugs Bunny ... hell, I'd watch it if Beetle Bailey made the silly thing. I give chances where they are due.

What's with all the Flash hating on this board. If Flash can't get a bit of love on a super hero website I fear for him. I love the flash. I just wish DC comics hadn't got so confusing with the multiple flash characters across multiple universes that combine into a fewer number of universes with a speed force somewhere that's depleted and then isn't and Barry Allen is dead and there's Wally West but then Barry Allen is alive.

Why can't the heads of comics companies say to their writers 'If you're thinking of killing someone off ormaking certain people powerless let us know so we can see how it fits in with the wider universe and decide if it's a good idea'. All this cheap deaths and things for dramatic effect are retconned basically means things are always going to go back to how they originally were and 'big' events have no impact. I'm surprised Barbara Gordon hasn't started walking again yet.

I have nothing to add but if everyone commenting on this post jumped into a jacuzzi together, we'd have human Alphabet Soup!

If they do a Flash movie, it will have to be the Flash that was Barry Allen. Not Wally West, the clown we see in the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series. Especially since they are doing the Green Lantern with Hal Jordan.

@ Rob (u do us proud man, posting with your human name instead of an initial) Well, I'm pretty sure its those same heads of comics companies that called in for the resurrections. When archetypes like Barry Allen were killed off for a) dramatic appeal, b) restarting sales with a 'new' archetype for the era, said Editors probably weren't looking up the word "consequences" in their vocabulary (if it existed at all). I guess it all comes down to sales. Hence Babs is still crippled. But why, dear lord, why did they bring back Jason Todd? I haven't been reading MARVEL since Civil War so I'm wondering if come 2011 we'll see Steve Rogers back to life. Of course, it is inevitable. The only death story that ever worked was Superman's and even HE didn't stay dead. Flash: The Movie - make it Barry Allen. Give Jay and Wally cameos if it's REALLY needed. I always liked the old TV Show, but I don't think such a dark iteration of the character in the new franchise is what we need. I heard David Goyer wrote the script they're talking about up here, it should've been good. Goyer's a better writer than a director. As for cartoon characters backing MARVEL, it's not a big stretch at all: Bugs has been doing it for DC for the past forever. So I guess those two are still at war with each other. Despite Roger Rabbit.

LOBO Sucks Hurry up with Flash

Posted by: Bo on October 6, 2009 at 07:37:53

It makes sense really Geoff Johns who is involved with comic book movies said recently that there is the top 5 instead of the Trinity that includes Green Lantern and Flash, so I see this as trying to get a big push for the Flash. Batman and Green Lantern is being pushed, so know we need Superman and Wonder Woman. DC/ WB really needs to get WW made after years of development hell.

Leeerrroooyyyy MMjjjenkins!!!

HA! That's priceless. I hope I'm not the only one who gets that.

Now on to the subject of the Flash. ;)

I would love to see the Flash come to the big screen. He's already had a TV show (an underappreciated one I might add) and Ryan Reynolds would have been perfect to play Wally West. However, if they did make a movie I would rather see Barry Allen than Wally. It would be like making a a Kyle Raynor Green Lantern movie if they went with Wally. The one thing I don't understand is why is it so hard to write a script for one of these movies. Pick up a comic folks. Start with the origin and build from there. Find a villain and an evil plot and viola! I know it's not that simple, but look at the dark knight and iron man. They pulled stories from the comics and wrote stories that resonated with fans and non-fans alike. The problem arises when a screen writer thinks he's smarter than the audience and puts together a story that may be "artistic" or "true in spirit" or just "what he or she thinks the story/character should be" and then the crapfest begins. Then we get movies like Hulk, Fantastic Four, Catwoman, X3, and Ghost Rider, too name few of the many. I wish these big studios would start asking the fans what they want to see instead of giving us what they think we want to see. Give us a chance to affect the outcome of our favorite characters. My 2 cents.

I think a part of the difficulty of a Flash movie is figuring how to fully visually represent his powers and make it make sense. Goyer is good at that, with origins, considering the dark knight. Can SHH get a script review of Flash btw?

The second problem is motivation - we know Barry's mother was killed and his father convicted for it, and that's good superhero origin grist. But, who would be the villain for the first movie? Professor Zoom? He's Flash's joker - can't put him in the first movie without explaining Flash can time travel.
The rest of the Rogues? No one of them is really powerful enough to justify their own movie.

What villain audiences better respond to? Who can play a guy who sees Guilt or Innocence, decides in the blink of an eye, and cracks down faster than lightning?

Despite of comic book relevance, you need a true visionary to pull off a great adaptation. Like Tim Burton to name names. But yeah, you're right, transiting Flash from the comics to the movies shouldn't be as hard as they make it sound. Just treat it like any other 'well made' movie instead of a 'superhero' movie. That's how Nolan did it, that's how the comics do it, and it's worked out pretty well so far :P

@ Buddy

The dude with Mr. Freeze's ice-gun. Compare 'freeze time' with 'fast pace' and you got a modern reinvention of the "Freeze Villain" archetype. Doesn't hurt that Captain Cold (just don't use the name) is a villain with a moral. Also, the Mirror Master is a good possibility. I'm just sayin.

I agree with some posts...why wasn't Ryan Reynolds cast for the flash instead of Green Lantern? I just don't seem him being the Green Lantern. He says one-liners very much on point and the Flash is known for that.

On another point...I think if they explore the little things of the character it will bring out a better tone to the movie. Look at the Dark Knight for example. The filmmakers explained where he got his gadets, suit, car, etc. and how he continues to upgrade. They also explain WHY he needs them. Think of that in terms of the Flash. He is super fast and in the comics needs to eat very often because every part of his body, including his metabolism, is incredibly fast. They could show him constantly having to eat to maintain his strength. This brings a realism to the character that is needed. This would be better than just saying "Oh hey, here's the Flash, now watch him run..." Also, they could explain where he got his suit from. Friction/Fire resistent material is not exactly available at your local Wal-Mart.

The thing is...all comic book character movies can be made well, with a sense of realism, integrity, and no campy, corny items if hollywood would find what they lost about 20 years ago: IMAGINATION. Lets face it...very often if something imaginative comes out of hollywood, there is someone involved that screws it up somehow.

Bottom line...just use some imagination and creativity and the movie will be atleast better than average.

lmfao i love how dc fans always have to bash marvel. never fails. dc needs to reboot superman, and do not make it dark. skip flash for sure. focus on green lantern, wonder woman, and green arrow.

being a marvel zombie i cant leave without defending them. aimed at 13 year olds? why would you say that? because of the rating? dark knight was pg13. marvel has done a great job with appealing to all ages, give them credit where credit is due. they are doing what dc cant do right now. i am the first and probably only marvel zombie to say the dark knight is the greatest comic film made. stop hating and give props where props are due.

What's up with those alphabet name's ?

The Flash will be an Outstanding movie i'll give it 9 out of 10, the 1 is for development.

Great. I'm happy WB gave up on a Justice League film so they could focus on...nothing at all.

Personally I think Flash is a dumb character. At first all he could do was run fast. Eventually they made it so he could do all sorts of weird things like running so fast he can time travel, etc. To me that just makes him kind of ridiculous. That suit looks good in comics but I can't imagine it working in live action. It looked stupid on the TV show for example and that was a well constructed suit. The show was sort of a faulty premise to begin with because they tried so hard to make it look like Burton's Batman and that doesn't fit The Flash.

It seems like the flash got flushed. Btw, who are the posters in this forum - men in black?
