SuperHeroHype.com caught up with Watchmen star Jeffrey Dean Morgan on the set of his new film, The Losers, based on the DC/Vertigo comic book series. Though we're still under embargo for full details from the set, Jeffrey did share with us a role that he's gunning for; the main man himself in Guy Ritchie's recently announced Lobo.
"[T]hey're making 'Lobo' right now," offered JDM, "That would be cool. 'Lobo' would be very cool. I don't think that I'm as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke's body on my head, that would be just great."
The comic book character, re-developed in the early '90s, is that of an intergalactic bounty hunter and hard-drinking biker. Designed as somewhat of an over-the-top parody of his violent anti-hero contemporaries, Lobo has become a popular mainstay of the DC Universe, appearing outside of comics in "Superman: The Animated Series" and "Justice League," as well as in his own animated web-series.
"You're always looking for material that's kind of smart and fun and this seems to be where it is right now," says the actor in regards to his interest in so many comic book properties, "The studios are really gravitating towards it, more than I've ever seen them gravitate towards anything in a long time. Comic books are really the thing right now and I don't see that going away for at least the next couple of years."
Lobo has two major creative forces in common with The Losers in producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman, a connection not at all lost on Dean Morgan.
"I do have an in," he admits, "I'll be elbowing somebody soon."

"They should scrap the whole Lobo film and do some real DC heroes.
Aquaman, The Flash, Wonder Woman - anything but this 2nd rate hero."
You realize that Marvel had to test the waters a bit before making a serious attempt at their big properties (something WB and DC has done already anyway), right? There would be no X-Men movies without Blade...

After having first seen this Morgan guy on that crapfest WEEDS & then watching him ruin every scene he did in SUPERNATURAL, for me---he's un-watchable. Something cloying & smarmy going on there.

Everyone needs to check out Matthew Willig. This guy is a tank and speaks perfect english. He played Little Chino at the beginning of season 2 of Dexter. Definitely a good fit for Lobo.

I still say we need a bigger guy, unless they're gonna CG him up. Remember this isn't going to be shakespear, we're not looking for sophisticated banter here. Lobo is an ultra violent, kinda nihilistic character, who spends a good part of the books killing, and in one story, sawed the legs off an old lady. Ok, we don't want someone as terrible as Arnie playing Lobo, but even Arnie wouldn't have been big enough.

Triple H is a spitting image of bisley's Lobo, and that is the best Lobo there has EVER been. See Lobo's Back and The Last Czarnian

This movie should not be made, period. DC needs to make Wonder Woman before an obscure character like Lobo. Outside of comic fans, no one knows who the F Lobo is.
I know who he is, and I have no interest.
Love JDM though!

can lobo be hispanic? they should cast the guy from no country for old men. javiar bardam.

Okay, new rule: No more pro-wrestler suggestions. This isn't about casting Lobo in a poster. This is for a movie. It requires acting.
As for Jason Mamoa--c'mon, really? This guy doesn't even look big enough to work as a bouncer at the bar I go to. Look past the dredlocks, people. He's a pretty little fratboy.
Javier Bardem would be an intersting choice--and better than JDM, I might add. But comic book movies don't seem like his thing. I bet he could pull it off nicely.
And no, there's no reason he couldn't be Hispanic. Someone on the other Lobo forum suggested Danny Trejo, a Chicano. But though he's a cool actor, I don't see Trejo gettting around his accent and I don't see Lobo speaking with it.

Oh, and I really like the idea of Kevin Durand playing Lobo! That guy steals all his scenes. I know he was the Blob, but when I think of him, I think of his roles in Walking Tall and 3:10 To Yuma ("they're gonna hang me in the mornin..."). I'm waiting for him to break into bigger stardom.

If they could just transplant Mickey Rourke altogether would be perfect as Lobo.
Posted by: CaptainHulk on September 14, 2009 at 16:25:57
I would get Tyler Mane who's played Michael Myers in the new Holloween movies.

I'm just saying, that if you think about the Lobo persona the 7ft wrestler Kevin Nash would be perfect to play the part.

Wow i hope Guy Ritchie is paying attention tho this. Give Jeffery Dean Morgan the job. the comedian was kinda similar only Lobo is way over the top. and he looks the part, just needs to bulk up some. otherwise hes perfect!

This might be the only reason I'd see this. JDM is great! And to those worried about the pudge he was carrying in Watchmen, it was how he was supposed to look. He looked pretty buffed in the back-flashes.
And wasn't the Comedian almost exactly the same as Lobo? Two jerks you love to hate?
Posted by: Fragger on September 14, 2009 at 17:39:24
What? I cannot believe that NO ONE has yet mentioned the Perfect guy for the role (although Durand is an excellent choice) the man, who was once known as "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson! Tell me he is not perfect for the role?

I would love to see a Lobo movie done right. I've been hearing that the powers that be are gunning for a PG-13 rating. If that happens, it will destroy the movie. Like the Punisher, Lobo is a violent character. More humorous than the Punisher, but just as violent. Maybe even more so since it's so over the top. If a moive is done, it needs to have an R rating. I also agree that there's more popular DC characters to do a movie on. I'd piss myself if DC went for a Captain Marvel movie. It would have to be better than that piece of **** Superman movie a couple years ago.

No to all wrestlers. No to Jason Mamacita, er, Maricon, er, Mamoa. He can play Lobo's girlfriend, tho. No to JDM. The character's name is Lobo, not Gordo.

p.s. NO FRIGGING WRESTLER'S
THEY CANT ACT OK.
Posted by: rainingcrow on September 14, 2009 at 22:01:14
jason momoa is a total freakin badass, he's been fight trianed by james bamford, he's bigger buffer and tougher than vin deisal or triple h, can act, has the rough tough look and voice, not to mention already looks like lobo to boot, and has played an alien badass character already for like 4 years. forget mickey rouke, forget the wrestler idiots, and go with some one practically made for this role.
