Three Studios in the Running for Kick-Ass
August 10, 2009
The Risky Biz Blog reports that the footage from director Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass shown at Comic-Con (read description here!) has brought three studios to the table:
Two weeks after promo footage unspooled at Comic-Con, "Kick-Ass," the Matthew Vaughn comic-book adaptation about an everyday teen who becomes a superhero, is closing in on a buyer.
Lionsgate, Paramount and Universal are in the running for the pic, which Vaughn financed independently after some studios found the project’s violence too graphic and some of its dialogue too profanity-laced and opted not to board it at the script stage.
But the Comic-Con event garnered a hugely warm response from the fan universe, which has in turn helped convince the companies to reconsider. Buyer screenings followed the week after Comic-Con, and several studios began circling the pic.

really dont care bring on iron man 2 ready for whiplash and war machine hell yeah! oh and FIRST

FIRST!!! Always wanted to say that, but really though it no surprise that studios are on Kick-Ass after the Con. It's really a brillant comic and will be a better Watchmen than Watchman.

There's no way any studio will release this film under its current title unless it was straight to DVD. It will not get a major release under the title, "Kick-Ass".
Posted by: hmmm on August 11, 2009 at 00:58:45
i'd assume that paramount has the edge b/c of their relationship with marvel
since kick-ass is under the marvel icon imprint and all that...

@Prediction
you're right. i better not go to the movies next week and see inglorious basterds. with a title like that it must be terrible

Finally! We're actually getting somewhere with this movie! Now lets finish up the comic, set a release date for the movie and get on with our lives.

@hmmm
Who said anything about Kick-Ass not being a good movie because of it's title? Prediction just said the studios are probably going to force a title change. It's a marketing thing. The studio can't advertise a movie with "ass" in the title.
Same thing happened with Smith's "a couple of dic ks". The major networks won't run ads before a certain hour.
I'm really glad this movie is getting picked up. That footage sounded amazing, I'd love to see it. I was literally doubling over with laughter at the thought of the kid getting shanked trying to stop an auto theft.

Geeze people the footage is all over YouTube if you want to see it. There are a total of five clips from San Diego. Four scenes and the trailer. Hit Girl steals the show in the fourth clip as well as the trailer. Looks phenomenal!

YYYAAAYYY! I LOVED the clips to death, and really hope that someone picks it up soon.

Remember Badassss a few years ago?
They had no problem marketing that movie with that title.
There's even a movie that Kevin Smith is making called "A couple of ****s". Besides, in this day and age the word "ass" is as common as the word "yes".

Does anybody know why the comic book is so behind shipping? Millar seems to be forgetting the people(the comic readers) who actually made this comic now movie popular. I've waited so long to read the comics, that I'm starting not to care about the movie.

Best Guess is Universal pictures because Wanted went there as well also written by Mark Millar so i guees that would make sense of course could be wrong?

inglourious basterds is being advertised all over the place. Kick-Ass is tame compared.

I think for the sake of the title and it's content that Lionsgate would be the most sound option all of these studios have had Marvel offering. paramount-Ironman, Lionsgate-punisher, Universal-the Hulk. of the three Lionsgate is the one not afraid to put out a hard R film. though after punisher war zone they should be.
Of course it's going to come down to who has the better offer. Which it needs to seeing as how Vaughn and Miller funded this indie style.

Did we forget there was a movie called Jackass?

this is the state of film-making, where any project that is slightly risqué, consisting of some artistic flair rather than just having the sole purpose of making money for studio bosses with sequels and spin-off merchandise and video games, has to be financed personally.
No wonder these vast, souless cinema's show nothing but s.h.i.t.e week after week

I saw the footage they showed at CC just yesturday, and I can safely say that it looks completely awesome and hystarical. Everyone is spot on and looks really well...kick-ass....especialy Hitgirl, I have never seen a little girl kill so mercilessly then in this, let alone anything...
I hope a studio picks it up soon so we all get to see it because it will definately live up to its name.

Paramount should get Kick-Ass. They already have a good relationship with Marvel. And something tells me they would take care of the movie alittle bit better and promote it better then Loinsgate and Universal.

The word A44 will not stop this title from being released.
Ass is a very common word on TV these days.
Also the connotation of the word is not sexual so that is one less issue.
Also there are no laws in the land that would censor that word as a movie title.

I'm actually more excited about this than Iron Man 2. Something new and fresh - I think it has lots of potential.

Ju?, or Jackass Number Two?
Posted by: the ButnakedAvenger on August 11, 2009 at 13:34:48
@cashew
They changed the Couple of Dic ks title for marketing reasons. I dont remember a mass marketing campaign for Peebles' movie.
I'm not in favor of a title change. Not one bit. And given the violent nature of the film and the fact that it's the character's name, they may see it as a small issue.... but i wouldn't be surprised if somebody had an issue with it.

I saw the footage for this at WWC this past weekend. It looks AMAZING! A ten year girl murdering gansters with a katana to the "Banana Splits" theme song may be the greatest thing these eyes have ever wtnessed. I cannot WAIT to see the rest of this thing!

Now normally it would be against my better nature to actually say anything but all of you are ****ing retarded the comic is behind cause marvel is ****ing retarded trying constantly to resurrect what was done. For those of you who believe that this is gonna be better than any other movie like watchmen or watever you like please please remember that the only movie ever to actually be the closest to the movie was watchmen, Kickass the costumes are all ****ing wrong and the people look ****ing retarded and im sorry but for those of us who actually read comics its wrong, secondly does anyone remember wolverine origins anyone wanna touch that one cause lets face it people that was a worse abomination than most tv movies. Now for those of you who wanna sit and pick on me cause i have no idea what im talking about i have been reading comics longer than most of you marvel is turning into the earth x trilogy and ohh yeah wolverine isnt a mutant. Now if this movie actually comes out im assured that it will be worse than mark millars wanted movie and probally worse than the nick fury movie they once tried doing for those of you who actually know it.So basically shut the **** up about the movie go read the damn comic and pray that its not ever ever picked up
