Cartoon Network Developing Three Comic Book Adaptations
Source:Cartoon Network
July 23, 2008

Cartoon Network has kicked off development on three comic book titles: "Firebreather," "The Vanishers" and "Mice Templar." Image Comic's "Firebreather," created by Phil Hester, and "Mice Templar," by Mike Avon Oeming and Bryan Glass, will be developed as animated original movies. IDW Publishing's "The Vanishers," created by Chuck Dixon, will be produced as a live-action original movie.

"We're thrilled to expand our movie slate with both cinematic quality CG and live action," said Ramsey Naito, vice president of long-form at Cartoon Network. "As we bring these and other titles into development, we'll be seeking out projects that combine distinct voices with striking, contemporary visual worlds."

"Firebreather" tells the story of awkward teenager Duncan Rosenblatt, a typical high school kid in most respects, but atypical in one very big way: his dad is a fire-breathing dragon, and Duncan's destiny is to protect the earth. Duncan must go to school, try to fit in, and in his off time, fulfill his destiny. Created and co-executive-produced by Phil Hester ("The Wretch"), "Firebreather" is executive-produced by Julia Pistor ("Lemony Snicket") and co-executive-produced by Andy Kuhn ("Freedom Ring"), and Jim Kreig ("Ben 10: Alien Force") joins as writer.

"Mice Templar" is an epic based on Mike Avon Oeming's ("Powers") and Bryan Glass' ("Magician Apprentice") comic book series about a young mouse named Karic and the prophecy that leads him to reunite the long disbanded order of the Mice Templar. Karic, chosen to be a warrior, bravely rescues his village and carries on the tradition of this mighty band of mice-knights.

"The Vanishers" is Chuck Dixon's ("Batman" comics) action-packed tale of fifth graders Andy and Arvis and their adventures through time. The duo sets out on their trans-dimensional mission to collect precious information from Arvis' time-traveling family. It turns out the Arvises are on the run from a group of treacherous villains who are armed with deadly robots and are intent on taking control of time itself in an effort to enslave humanity. "The Vanishers" is executive-produced by Circle of Confusion's Rick Jacobs ("The Suffering"), David Alpert ("Them") and Ted Adams, president of IDW Publishing.

Wow, I never heard of any of these but what is up with Hollywood? Do they just go to comic shops now waiting for new stuff to come out? Maybe the writers out there should go back to school and retake creative writing, hahaha.

Astro City would be a cool cartoon if done right. Never thought of that one but a live action movie of Astro City would be better. And I remember ASH. Decent book.

Mice Templar's a good comic. Good Idea. Give it a chance. Its good.

I like anything that Chuck Dixon's done, so "The Vanishers" could be a good one. Can't say I've read it to base an opinion off of it though, will definitely have to hunt that one down. As for everyone suggesting Astro City: hell yeah! That book (like Watchmen) should be on everyone's wish list. Another interesting one (and another Kurt Busiek story with some Alex Ross art) would be Marvels. Then we could also get Kingdom Come and a bunch of other good stuff that's yet to be done. It's a good time to be a fan.

It seems like an oversight to me that Andy Kuhn is only credited as a producer and as a guy who worked on Freedom Ring. After all, he did all the artwork for every Firebreather comic.

Wow, very surprising that this is a website for superhero and comic book related movies and a lot of people on here have never heard of these three projects! I am definitely looking forward to Firebreather the most! It's a great comic and will translate well as an animated feature, I am sure.

Now that I had a chance to re-read the article, I also like Mr. Oeming's run on Thor (just before they killed him off in Ragnarok) so the Mice Templar should be good as well. Can't say that I know anything by Phil Hester off the top of my head though, going to have to go back through my collection. Always a labor of love....

Besides Firebreather, Phil Hester has worked on Nightwing, Ant-Man, Green Arrow and Clerks...the last two he worked on them with Kevin Smith.

Mice Templar is a very enjoyable read. It would be an easy one to adapt for kids.

To those mentioning MARVELS, I would like to see a CGI adaption of that miniseries or at least animated. Something in a fresh style, to compliment Ross's original upgraded look.

Mice Templar needs to be traditional animation... not CGI.

The other two being CGI and live action, respectively, is fine... But Mice Templar needs to look like the book, since that art was amazing.

Either way, I'm looking forward to these things

Natural Born Killers was art and it was suppose to be over the top like that and was critically praised for it I guess you just
have a really short attention span and a lack of imagination, rob zombie just ripped of that movie and made that white trash abortion of a flick called devils rejects watching that movie is like having a glass of acid thrown in your eyes.

Posted by: Art1991 on July 23, 2008 at 14:41:29

Isn't Firebreather also AMERICAN DRAGON: JAKE LONG?

Posted by: j on July 23, 2008 at 14:45:07

Jealous of rob zombies fame HaHaHaHa every single movie of his was a box office disaster so what fame are you talking about?

Posted by: j on July 23, 2008 at 14:50:49

Rob Zombie is a hack who likes to ripoff other movies and is obsessed with rape, chickenwings, moonshine, and making bad movies, i watch the behind the scenes on some of his movies and doesnt know what the **** hes doing. He should quit making movies or just try to do a much etter job and be more creative then rehashing the same **** over and over again

Thank you 80pork. Now I have something to hunt down. It's always nice to find new stuff to read.

I'm sorry but these three ideas are just, just BULL****

**loads gun and places to temple***

Oh wait! on second thought, I think I'll go see the Dark Knight again.

I vote with the guy that said they should remake "HOWARD THE DUCK!" YESSSSSSSSS.....

Posted by: Cal on July 23, 2008 at 18:08:00

Why no love for Mice Templar?

that comic is great.

Posted by: adams4000 on July 23, 2008 at 18:13:50

Am I the only one that thinks "Firebreather" sounds almost exactly like Disney's "American Dragon: Jake Long". If they are going to completely rip off a property they could have picked something better. Hell I'd rather see a remake of "Gummi Bears".

Posted by: strak on July 23, 2008 at 18:29:58

adams4000,

Yeah, you're the only one. Firebreather came out in 2003 and American Dragon came out in 2005.

Posted by: ukulelemike on July 23, 2008 at 19:30:16

I'd enjoy seeing a crossover movie: Superman and Hulk, Batmand and Captain America-something like that. Mask and Lobo was a good read.

Posted by: ukulelemike on July 23, 2008 at 19:31:53

Firebreather also reminds me of an anime called 'Dragonhalf"

Posted by: hhv94 on July 23, 2008 at 19:56:18

Sounds boring as hell...But then I've stopped watching CN after they messed with adult swim and decided to kiddie anime and take off anime shows off Toonami.
