The Flash Episode 6 Recap, Plus Promo for Episode 7

To mix things up, this episode opens with Iris delivering the opening monologue instead of Barry and in a rather meta-move, it’s the words she’s writing on her “Streak” blog that we’re hearing. Barry swoops in as The Flash and brings Iris to the roof where he once again tries to convince her to stop writing about him. She tries to nudge him into telling her about him, but he won’t have it. The sound of police sirens draw Barry away, just as Eddie calls Iris and she hangs up on him, and he scoots her back into the cafe before heading off into the fray.

Down on the street we see Tony Woodward driving a hummer in a very reckless fashion and being pursued by the police. Joe and a few other officers create a barricade down the street to cut him off and as the vehicle approaches a kid (wearing headphones, darn kids). As Joe tries to warn the kid to move, Barry zooms in and saves the kid from peril. Woodward’s vehicle approaches and Eddie takes some shots, and the bullets bounce off of his face. Eddie almost becomes a pancake too but is saved by Joe. As Woodward drives off to freedom, Barry cuts him off down an alley where he exits the car and they start to throw down. Barry gets some good shots in but he breaks his hand on Woodward’s jaw, which is met with having the crap knocked out of him.

Barry makes it to STAR Labs where his buddies find him on the floor quite injured. They diagnose him with a number of injuries which will be healed by morning thanks to his powers. He recounts to the group who he fought and he was a meta-human, where we get a kind of corny “Man of Steel” name drop by Dr. Wells. Though he’s not totally certain, Barry thinks he knows who it was he fought that night.

The next morning Joe is watching a video of young Barry recounting what happened to his mother on that fateful night, just as big boy Barry pops in to tell him that last night’s fugitive was a meta-human. Joe tells Barry he’s off to chase a lead and he needs Barry to work with Eddie that day. Barry joins in on the department meeting where they learn the wanted man is Tony Woodward, and Barry remember being bullied by him as a kid. Eddie tries to talk to Barry about Woodward deflecting bullets with his face, but Barry brushes it off at the behest of Joe. Iris shows up to talk to Eddie, who notices that things are weird between her and Barry (don’t forget they had a friendship break-up last week). We cut to STAR Labs where Joe has arrived to talk to Dr. Wells about something, specifically Nora Allen’s murder.

Cisco, Caitlin, and Barry talk about how Woodward used to torture Barry as a kid and they have a heart to heart about their own childhood bullies. They go into an adjacent room and Cisco reveals a robot he’s developed to help Barry train his fighting – he calls it Girder (a nod to the name Tony Woodward goes by in the comic books). As Barry gets stomped by the robot, Eddie calls and says they’ve found the Hummer that Woodward stole and he needs to work the scene. Caitlin scolds Barry about visiting Iris in costume as he prepares to leave, but it all goes in one ear and out the other.

At the crime scene, Barry does his thing, finding a few metal flakes in the car, and he and Eddie talk about the riff between he and Iris. Eddie admits to being intimidated by Barry, which is a welcome surprise. As Barry and Eddie talk about the suspect, Barry flashes back to boxing lessons with Joe and Iris in the park as a little kid. Joe tells him it’s okay to run away if he knows he can’t take an opponent. The pair head off to a brewery in Keystone where Tony had lifted a few kegs before going off on his joy ride.

Joe breaks down the Nora Allen murder to Dr. Wells and explains what little Barry saw with the tornado with a man inside it. He posits to Dr. Wells that perhaps other meta-humans were alive at the time and that’s what happened, but Wells tells him that’s highly unlikely. Eddie and Barry pop in to the brewery to see if anyone knows anything and low and behold the man that runs away knows something. Eddie chases after him while Barry speeds ahead to cut him off. The guy throws a punch directly into Barry’s jaw but Eddie is able to catch him. They ask him how he knows Tony Woodward and he confesses to not killing him, a strange question given he’s still alive. He goes on to essentially lay out the origin story of Woodward, who was fired from the iron works and fell in over a railing into a molten vat of iron.

At the cafe, Iris and a co-worker are talking about Barry when Tony shows up to try and schmooze with Iris. He’s been reading her blog and he tells her she should be writing about him instead of The Streak, who he claims to have killed. Iris’ coworker points out that Tony is on the TV as a wanted man and Iris does the least smooth thing possibly and pulls her phone out to call the cops. Tony takes her phone, makes his arm metal, and crushes it, leaving Iris speechless.

Cisco has learned that the flakes Barry picked up at the crime scene could have only come from the Keystone Iron Works, and just as he explains this Caitlin shows Barry Iris’ blog, where she’s left a message for him. Barry runs to the cafe where she tells him about her encounter with Woodward, and Barry heads to the Iron Works. Inside, we see the entire transformation of Woodward told through the aftermath. He fell in a vat during the Particle Accelerator storm and cooked in the molten metal. After it cooled down he broke out… and he’s standing right behind you Barry! Tony throws a giant shelf down on Barry and leaves him for dead. Caitlin and Cisco come to Barry’s aid and help him back to STAR, where Dr. Wells chastises him for being so reckless, but Barry is confused and emo about it. Cisco then comes up with the genius idea of running fast enough to create a sonic boom punch, which in theory could disable Woodward’s powers for a moment.

At CCPD Joe and Barry talk about the case and Barry admits to biting off more than he can chew. Joe dispenses some more fatherly advice by telling Barry not to let his emotions drive him. The pair learn that a video showed Woodward leaving town, and Joe heads off to chase another lead as Barry accompanies Eddie to the cop gym upstairs. The two swap bully stories and trade punches with a punching bag. Eventually Barry throws one a little too fast and busts the bag open.

Dr. Wells and Joe meet for a drink to continue discussing the case, and talking more about the potential for meta-humans being around 14 years ago. Wells continues to act shady and gets offended when Joe seemingly starts to question him as a suspect. Granted, only we the viewers know that he’s shady, but it further illustrates that this character has some ill intentions. As he leaves, Wells tells Joe to look up Tess Morgan, that will give him his answer.

Iris sits at home working on her blog as a police cruiser waits outside, but here comes Tony (the title for my sitcom about Girder). He dispatches the cops and shows up inside. Barry and Eddie continue to do some fight training until a fellow officer comes in to tell them that Iris is missing. As Cisco continues to work on the calculations for a sonic boom punch, Barry phones in for help locating Woodward and Iris, just as Joe walks in the building.

Tony takes Iris to their old school where he once again asks her to write about him instead of The Streak, for no particular reason other than he likes her. Iris plays this to her advantage and gets close to him before pulling a fire alarm at a school. Barry and Joe stand around (way to be proactive guys!) and they hear about a fire alarm being pulled at Barry, Iris and Tony’s old school. Barry leaps into action.

Back at the school Iris tells Tony it’s not too late to turn himself in, but Tony says he’s not going down without a fight, just as Barry shows up. The two start throwing haymakers and Barry seemingly becomes Peter Parker in the fight due to both handling his enemy and throwing some funny verbal jabs in there too. Tony throws Barry around on the end of a flagpole, leaving Barry clutching his tummy on the ground. He flashesback to what Joe told him about running and darts out of the school. Cisco and Caitlin monitor him and realize he’s gone the right amount of distance to build up enough speed for the sonic boom punch. Barry books it back to the school, going so fast through Central City that he starts breaking all the windows and launching himself into the school and hitting Woodward in the jaw like a boss. Both of them fall to the ground and as Tony gets up Iris delivers the final blow.

They put Tony in their makeshift prison down in the particle accelerator. He gives him an earful about being a bully and using his powers for the wrong reasons before dropping the mic and shutting the door on him. Cisco asks whose childhood bully they’re going to go after next. Joe pops in to apologize to Dr. Wells who explains the circumstances of he and Tess Morgan’s work together. They make amends as Dr. Wells says once and for all that his work didn’t kill Nora, which we know isn’t true.

Barry shows up to the cafe to talk to Iris, who thinks he’s The Streak at first. They decide that a friendship break-up was silly and they want to be friends again. Iris starts to talk about her blog and The Streak. We even get a cute little Easter egg for Firestorm just before the two come up with “The Flash” name for him. Back at his house Joe looks over the evidence and suddenly a tornado bursts into the room and Joe sees “The Yellow Man” that Barry saw all those years ago. Once the tornado leaves, all the evidence is gone and a message is written on the wall: “Stop or else,” with a knife through a photo of Iris.

You can check out the promo for episode 7 of “The Flash” in the player below. Titled “Power Outage,” the episode is officially described as follows:

“The Flash goes up against Farooq aka Blackout (guest star Michael Reventar), a metahuman who can harness electricity. During their battle, Farooq zaps The Flash and siphons all his electricity, leaving The Flash without his speed. Dr. Wells, Caitlin and Cisco work to reverse the effects on Barry, but their efforts are disrupted when Farooq comes banging on S.T.A.R. Labs doors in search of Wells, who he blames for his accident. Without Barry’s powers to protect them, the group must figure out a way to save themselves from the metahuman. Meanwhile, Tockman manages a coup inside the Central City police department and takes several people hostage, including Joe and Iris. While Iris is sure The Flash will save them, Eddie has a trick up his sleeve.”

Directed by Larry Shaw and written by Alison Schapker & Grainne Godfree, “Power Outage” is set to air November 25. “The Flash” airs Wednesdays at 8 P.M.
