11 More Superhero Movies That Almost Happened

Before she appeared in 2003’s Daredevil, Natural Born Killers and JFK director Oliver Stone was interested in bringing Elektra to the big screen for quite some time. Reports pointed toward Stone being attached to the project as early as 1992 and even revealed the film would have been titled Elektra Assassin. The press notes for Natural Born Killers not only confirmed the Elektra Assassin title but that the film would be based on the Frank Miller/Bill Sienkiewicz mini-series.

Though the film would have shared its namesake with the previously-released mini-series, it would have had little in common with it, as the film would reportedly show Elektra going up against the legendary ninja clan The Hand as opposed to being hunted by S.H.I.E.L.D. A later report on the matter revealed that the reasoning behind this change was due to Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s screen rights being tied up in another deal. Another rumor I uncovered, though I’m not entirely sure how accurate it was, pointed toward actress Gabrielle Reece as Stone’s choice for the lead role.

Eventually the film was killed, not because of Stone’s lack of enthusiasm on the project, but because Elektra was bundled up and sold along with Bullseye and Kingpin in the “Daredevil” package to Twentieth Century Fox. The character would go on to be played by Jennifer Garner in Daredevil as well as her own spin-off film.
