#2 CASTING CHANGES
As far as most films go, the cast you see in the final product is seldom who was originally approached or even signed on for the film. Iron Man was no different. While the role for Tony Stark was pretty much Robert Downey Jr.’s from the beginning, many other characters could have been very different. It’s hard to imagine someone other than Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts after three film appearances, but she wasn’t the original choice for the part. The lovely Rachel McAdams was director Jon Favreau’s initial pick for the role, but the actress turned it down.
There were far more casting changes for the sequels to Iron Man than the first movie. The role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow was particularly competitive. Jessica Biel, Gemma Arterton, Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie all were considered for the role. Eventually Emily Blunt was cast in the role but had to pull out so she could film Gulliver’s Travels. Two more roles that were almost different were Justin Hammer and Tony’s father Howard Stark. Tim Robbins was rumored to play the elder Stark, while Al Pacino was briefly considered for the role of Justin Hammer. Iron Man 2 would have been very different with Ricky Roma as the antagonist. Iron Man 3 even had a last minute casting change as Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain signed on for the role of Maya Hansen, but she had to back out leading to Rebecca Hall being cast in the film.
