Hero Chat Episode 3 – September 6, 2012

TOPIC #2 – THE S.H.I.E.L.D. TELEVISION SHOW

With the announcement of the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, what angle do you think they’ll take the show (genre, style)? What characters will they bring in (new or from the one shots/films)? And who do you want to see on the creative side with Joss? Let’s take genre, style first.

Obviously the pilot is going to be big, flashy, expensive and full of cameos.

I would think that it would be done similar to many police procedurals with agents showing up at S.H.I.E.L.D. and being informed of what is going on in the world.

I’d be shocked if we didn’t see Robert Downey Jr. or Samuel L Jackson there.

It may take a “24″ style of handheld/cinematic but I have a feeling it won’t just deal with superheroes in the Marvel Universe i.e. it won’t be “Smallville.”

Let’s hope not

No, but let’s remember, guys. This is still on a TV budget.

I agree that the pilot has to have a big budget but there’s a danger of the show turning into Heroes if they try to do a lot of superhero stuff on screen rather than have characters mentioned and then S.H.I.E.L.D. getting involved with helping them.

As along as they don’t promise THE AVENGERS: THE TV SHOW, S.H.I.E.L.D. should be fine. But if I were Disney/Marvel, I’d keep it restricted to 13 episodes max.

Not sure if you heard but Joss’s brother and another name were mentioned as showrunners with Joss contributing but he’ll be pretty busy with Avengers 2.

His brother Jed and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen.

But they had big hands on Dr. Horrible. So.. they’ll do fine.

13 episodes per season? That would make sense and would be more in line with what they’re doing on cable. They should start it in January 2015.

YES.

Make it lead into Avengers 2

That would be perfect.

Well, lead into Avengers 2 without actually leading into Avengers 2.

True. Now what about characters, who should they port over for TV? Who should they make new?

As Jamie said, this won’t be Avengers: The TV Show.

Unlike Captain America, Iron Man 2 and Hulk. Stop the movie to whore Avengers.

I’d expect Samuel L. Jackson to maybe make an appearance but I don’t think Robert Downey has even signed on for movies beyond Iron Man 3. And I just don’t see him, Chris Evans or Scarlett doing TV.

Obviously the guy who played Galaga.

LOL! “Guy playing Galaga” is suddenly going to be the biggest career stepping stone in Hollywood history.

Jackson will have the biggest role of the big-dogs.

But tonewise, I expect a similar semi-dramatic semi-comic show similar to Hill Street Blues or the likes. (I may have just dated myself there)

Normally, I’d agree, Ed. But these crazy Marvel contracts. You know there’s going to some kind of “Will they or won’t they?” romance.

I wonder if they’ll include nods to the Howling Commandoes.

As far as characters, they probably can have Cage, Iron Fist, White Tiger, that sort of level of hero. Daredevil!!! :) To set up for his spin-off television show of course

If the show is S.H.I.E.L.D., I actually think Marvel is going to keep all the superheroes on the big screen.

I wonder if they’ll somehow bring Dum Dum Dugan into present day since he was a big part of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics.

You know, if you wanna see Hulk kick ass or Iron Man make a funny quip, pay $10 in 3D instead of seeing em doing it for free.

A lot of other people have speculated with that re: Dum Dum.

Sure, all the big screen heroes but there’s lots of little ones they can introduce or hint at.
Who played Dum Dum again? Was that Neal McDonough?

Yes.

Neal would do it I bet. He’s a TV actor by trade. Not a slight against him. But some actors are made for film and others for TV. Neal is the latter.

I’m sure he would, too. I hope Cobie Smulders isn’t really over TV or if her CBS contract keeps her from appearing.

There ARE rumors she might move over…

That was something I wondered about.

Just saying… Say “How I Met Your Mother” hypothetically ended in another year or so. There is no start date for S.H.I.E.L.D. Just the films, so far.

This is true.

But let’s not forget that this is only in the pilot phase right now. Lots of pilots don’t get picked up for series. Although I’m sure ABC knows how much they’ll be able to charge for advertising even if the show sucks :)

How horrified would the world be if this didn’t get picked up.

True. But you know this will happen. Too much corporate synergy at play.

I can think of dozens of comic-based pilots that never happened… like Powers… like Aquaman… like Wonder Woman… like Global Frequency (based on the Warren Ellis comics). Maybe Powers will still happen.

Don’t forget ARROW!

I give Arrow half a season, though I haven’t seen the pilot or anything so I’m just talking out of my ass. :)

Those weren’t connected to one of the biggest movies of all time though.

Ha!

Good point there. That’s why The Flash got picked up. Because of how Batman exploded in 89. A year later, there’s The Flash on CBS.

It only lasted a season though didn’t it?

Yes, Sir.

Now you’re deliberately trying to make me cry by bringing up that Flash show, Jamie.

I watched The Flash religiously when it aired on CBS Thursday nights! Following Family Feud and Rescue 911.

Oh god, flashbacks to Rescue 911.

I think Jamie has a good point about the movie tie-in and I think that ABC will do whatever it takes to make sure they have a viable show.

And eventually it will expand to Daredevil, Hulk, aka Jessica Jones, etc…

It might not last perse. But they’re gonna take the chance.

AKA Jessica Jones, I remember them trying to do that show.

Doesn’t ring a bell…

Jamie, there was a comic by Bendis called “Alias” and Jessica Jones is the main character. They were talking about doing a detective show based on it.

On page 3, we talk about the Justice League Movie!
