There’s a real divide on the character of Aquaman. The people who love him really love him and the people who hate him only know about the character based on the Super Friends cartoon and the overwhelming amount of jokes made at his expense. If you look at the way he’s been reinterpreted in The New 52, you know that he might be one of the most badass characters in the entire DCU. In the words of the man himself, “I don’t talk to fish, I command them.”
Much like Wonder Woman, what makes Aquaman interesting in some regards is how much of an outsider he happens to be. While he is aware of his own capabilities and heroics, placing him in the midst of other heroes and super powered folk will make for a good dynamic. The character is headstrong and arrogant, often more so than Green Lantern and Batman, and that’s what will make him stand out. His willingness to carry out heroic tasks without thinking of himself or how it can affect him along with the amazing feats his powers bear him, will win over audiences.
I was going to pick Adrian Grenier for the role, but I couldn’t do it seriously and feared the joke would go over many peoples heads; however, my real pick was actually quite easy to think of: Chris Pine. He’s a great actor and after his stint in Star Trek and a minor role in Smokin’ Aces, we know he’s capable of performing well in high pressure situations, comedic timing, and being wicked cool. The only question would be is he capable of being the stone faced heir of Atlantis and not be outright funny? I think so.
